December 2011

Maithri educational and charitable trust thanks Gantothra for donating Geometry Boxes, plastic rulers, mathematical drawing instruments, exam boards and note pads to the students. We at Maithri thank him for this excellent gesture.

Maithri educational and charitable trust has been happy in receiving Maithri patron, Mr. R. Sreerangam from the United States. He has been one of our long term supporter who not only looks after our web site but also donates in very many ways.

On 24th December, trustee Dr. Shobana Sundaram who was visiting us from U.S.A. met with college going students of the trust. The students organized programmes that showed their talents in acting, dancing and singing and presented her a picture drawn by Mr. Ramachandran (school going student). The session ended with sweet distribution. On Christmas day, Dec 25, Dr. Shobana Sundaram and Mrs. Rajalakshmi had a joint interacting session with the students. The students mainly enquired about "the education and students life style" in the United States.

November 2011

Birthday of Mr. Shreedhar Rajaram's (Founder Trustee of Maithri educational and charitable trust) was celebrated on 4th of November in a grand manner by Maithri educational and charitable trust students. Despite heavy rains, the students participated in large numbers and spoke about how they become part of Maithri, its impact and benefits, the social awareness and understanding gained, etc., Students were full of warmth and affection for other Maithri students and volunteers. Birthday cake and snacks were enjoyed by students, volunteers and Mr. Shreedhar Rajaram.

On 6th of November, Maithri educational and charitable trust jointly with Vedika conducted Talent search session and in the evening, certificates for best entries and mementos for various participants were given by the chief guest. Maithri students sang invocation song for Universal Peac

Children's Day was celebrated on 14th November by Maithri students. 'Nehru mama's' life and love for children were discussed at length by the students. The day ended with birthday celebration for Mrs. Rajalakshmi, Instructor for Spoken English.

October 2011

Gandhi Jayanthi, October 2nd was celebrated by Maithri students. The event began with introductory remarks by Ramachandran followed by a skit on "gloomy economy" by Gopinath and group and ended with a quiz on Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Sastri devised by Mr.Ranganathan.

Special thanks to Mrs. Meera Sethuraman who, despite her age and ill-health, serves many NGOs by donating clothes, daily utilities and festival gifts. Maithri educational and charitable trust has been the recipient of her generosity again this year. On the occasion of Deepavali, Kumaran Silks, T.Nagar and Mylapore again gave dresses and dress materials for Maithri students. Mr. Balasubramanian and Ms Maya Nichani provided sweets and fire-crackers. On October 23rd, Mr. Subramaniam, a regular donor gave all Maithri students who attended his Rotary Club of Velachery, Chennai function in Madras Race Club Hall. The students, parents with volunteers were then taken for group photos in the park.

The group song practice session with accompaniment of a young drummer was organized by VEDIKA for the special event to be held on Nov 6, 2011.

September 2011

This is busy month for students as they prepare eagerly for their first quarterly examination of this academic year. Maithri Ed. and Ch. Trust celebrated "Teachers' day" with Kalanjiyam trust in V.K.R.T. Govt. School in Madhuranthagam village on 4th September. Founder trustee Shreedhar along with Mrs. Praveena (volunteer) and two senior students (Gopinath and Susilkumar) took part in this function where Maithri distributed educational fees for 23 students of local schools (adopted by Kalanjiyam). On the same occasion 20 teachers were honored and mementos were presented. The Trustees from both Maithri and Kalanjiyam and the headmaster of V.K.R.T. school and local administrators spoke at the function and a large gathering of students participated in this event.

August 2011

For the 12th consecutive year, on the 7th of this month, the founder trustee Mr. Shreedhar with a number of students and volunteers took part in the charity event "CITIZENS RUN". As always, the run was in the stretch of Marina Beach in Chennai. The event was a wonderful experience with a mix of hot sun and cool breeze followed by music involving a variety of drums and dances from the current movies. Mr. Shreedhar was requested by the organizers to welcome all the participants as he had taken part in all the run for the last 12 years as an NGO member.

Our 63rd INDEPENDENCE DAY was celebrated by our students. After honoring our National Flag, the students took pledge - to work for peace and work against corruption. Sweets were distributed to everyone who participated. Earlier the same morning around 6 o’clock the founder trustee and students attended a meditation class and prayer meeting for world peace and harmony.

On the 25th of this month Mr. Shreedhar along with a student-volunteer Mr. Gopinath met Mrs. Sulochana Krishnamurthy in her HANDICARE INTERNATIONAL (HCI) office, Chennai. The sponsorship cheque for 43 students supported by HCI and salary for one differently-abled staff was received by Maithri and Mr. Shreedhar signed the necessary documents.

July 2011

In spite of a new academic year load, the students continued to attend the SPOKEN ENGLISH AND PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT class on Sundays. They have become outspoken and enjoy the open discussion forum adopted in these classes.

Arts-interested students continued to work with VEDIKA this month and have produced some amazing designs and greeting cards.

June 2011

This month began with a large inflow of students seeking fees for another academic year. The progress and overall performance of students were reviewed and assessed on Saturdays. We have also started providing lunch to students attending Sunday classes since the students come from distant places to learn spoken English. The students are encouraged by the total care taken by Maithri and they started forming groups amongst themselves and also came forward in seeking help for the weaker subjects and areas in studies from fellow students and friends. This forum has developed into tutorial guidance in the evenings on weekdays by students for their friends and classmates. For a fun-filled summer day Maithri students along with a few volunteers went for a day-trip to Express Avenue Mall. The students had fun playing, eating and shopping.

Mr Santiago Sauquet, Mr Broca and Mr. Oriol Permanyer of Marc Sauquet Foundation, Spain visited Maithri on June 9 and exchanged views and talk with each student supported by Maithri through their funds and enquired about their progress and plans.

VEDIKA, a group formed by accomplished and educated ladies who teach simple science experiments using materials and things available at every household. Their creative ideas for making greeting cards, homemade glue, and they aim to produce many more items and display in a forth coming Carnival this year. The students enjoyed these activities and produced some interesting items.

May 2011

Maithri Trust celebrated its 20 years completion and on that occasion Maithri sponsored children came up with various cultural, educational and recreational programs which displayed their talent. The event was held at Ramakrishna Higher Secondary School (South branch) on 22nd May 2011. This special day was filled with cultural, educational, sports and award and recognition activities (see pictures below). Students from Kalanjiyam Trust supported by Maithri and Anakaputhur School also attended the event and made it an enjoyable and fun-filled event.

The chief guest Mr. Ashok Kumar Director, CAVINKARE, and Mr. Baski, a well-known artiste, spoke about the need of education and the role of charities like Maithri to bring out the hope for a better and brighter India. They advised that the students should alienate themselves from criticism and negative attitude and go with a 'can do' attitude without hesitations and reservations and project their talents when opportunities arise. The event was sponsored by State Bank of India and supported by Mr. Purushothaman of 'POTHYS', Mr. C. Sudhakar of 'CHO CHWEET', Mr. Subramaniam of Vodafone, Mr. Ramesh of Ramesh Graphics and many other anonymous supporters. Maithri expresses thanks to Ms. Reshma Sharma and her group, Mr. Wasim, and Ms. Sitara for making this event a huge success. Maithri donors and volunteers were honored during this event. The celebration was catered by Eco-Kitchen, Chennai.

The program included skits on education, mime, singing and dance performances. Maithri students, Ganesan (topper of XII grade) and Mahalaxmi (topper of X grade) were presented with 'Seshadri' and 'Sita' awards by Ms. Lalitha (sister of Sowmya, Maithri Trustee) and Mr. C.R. Sundaram (Maithri volunteer). Maithri-Anakaputhur team that won the cricket match against the Maithri-Chennai City team was awarded trophy and certificates by Mr. Sivakumar (Maithri-donor) of GSA Plants Service (Pvt.) Ltd. The drawing competition for various age levels were judged by Mr. Shyam, a well-known artist and certificates and prizes were awarded. Janani, Haripriya, first and the second prize in the children drawing competition. Chess competition was won by Jayaprakash and the carom-board competition was won by duo: Ashokumar and Thanigavel.

April 2011

The first half of this month was rather quiet with those students who had not finished their exams completing them and the rest planning for the annual Maithri get-together to be held in the month of May. The students have kept themselves busy organizing and laying the ground-work for the annual event. They are planning for both games and cultural events. Their e-invite is posted below. All Maithri patrons and volunteers are eager to attend this special event.

March 2011

This month, most of the students are busy with preparation for their final exams of their academic year yet, many students continued to attend the spoken English and personality development classes. Maithri along with Dewan Foundation (UK) distributed four special wheel chairs- to two disabled candidates and to two Leprosy affected fruit sellers to aid their daily routine; the tri-cycle will aid their mobility and their travel to (and fro) their shop with dignity. The total cost for this project is about Rs 20000/- which has been administrated along with Maithri, by Mr. Kailash, an official from Dewan Foundation U.K. They had already aided the young Venkatesh from Little Flower Deaf and Dumb School, T. Nagar, late last year with a hearing-aid.

February 2011

n the presence of Maithri Founder R.Shreedhar, the Kalanjiyam Trust released a book entitled "ANBULLA AMMAVKKU" (FOR THE DEAREST MOTHER - a CONSUMER GUIDE TO CHILD HEALTH) on 25th February. The Tamil translation of the original work of the U.S. based pediatrician Dr. Balasubramaniam was made by Mr. Supra Balan. The book was released by Dr Nalli Kuppusamy Chettiar, and Mrs. Vijaya Chamundeshwari (daughter of veteran cine actors Gemini and Savitri Ganesan) received the first copy in The Russian Culture Centre Chennai. About 25 students of Maithri and their parents attended this event and were given a copy of the book (for free) along with other child related DVDs of The Kalanjiyam Trust.

January 2011

On New Years' Day, the students took oath to commit to responsibilities and be loyal to those who had helped them in various areas. Those who have succeeded in the "campus" interview for jobs narrated their experiences and their help from the classes that they have been attending regularly for nearly a year.

On 9th Jan., Maithri celebrated the first anniversary of the SPOKEN ENGLISH AND PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT class taught by Mrs. Rajalakshmi. She has been teaching students every Sunday where they learn in a simple manner not only spoken English also, how to face challenges in interviews and other social arenas. This has been a free (no-fee) class, and students who cannot pay for transport to attend this special class were provided assistance by Maithri and its volunteers. This would be continued for the next year and hope many more students would benefit from this informal and useful class. Students produced small skits highlighting their experiences of the class and 25 YEARS of Maithri. The skits were heart-warming and provided positive vibes to carry on these kinds of projects. Lunch was served at the end of the show.

On 27th Jan., Maithri jointly with another NGO produced a DVD called "WONDER BRAIN". It is a detailed description of the growth and development of human brain by Dr. Preethika Chary and the DVD was released by actor/director Prithiviraj.
