December 2013

The 6th of this month marked the opening of MAITHRI Sukavarsha physio-therapy centre in 10th main road, Ashok Nagar, Chennai. Founder trustees Mr. Shreedhar along with a few well wishers were present. Mr. C.R.Sundaram cut the ribbon for a formal opening while Mrs. Meenakshi Sundaram performed the pooja along with Mrs. Swarna. Dr Kathyayini will be taking care of the center. The center has all basic therapy equipments including a traction unit. A good awareness has been created in the community and the response throughout the month has been very good.

On 25th Dec, Christmas day, founder trustee took part in the first annual day of Maithri Vidhya Kendram, a unit of Maithri Educational and Charitable Trust dedicated to promotion of talent in fine arts including dance in children. In the evening, students trained in vocal and instrumental music exhibited their talents in Maithri Vidhya Kendram's office in Chrompet, Chennai. Mr. Seshadri. Head-master of the local school was the chief guest. He distributed certificates and sweets to all those took part in the event. A few participants from Singapore had also participated.

On 29th Dec, 83 students from the trust went for a picnic to Mahabalipuram in two 30-seater bus sponsored by one of the parents of Maithri tuition center. Another set of parents provided lunch, drinks and snack packets for the children in the buses. The founder trustee also accompanied the students with few adult volunteers. The students enjoyed the beach shore temple, light house and the famous sculptures of ancient Pallavas. A trip enjoyed by the students and adults equally. This trip flagged the end of a good year and welcomed the New Year wishing for more success and happiness.

November 2013

This month marked the celebrations of Deepavalli, the festival of lights. A very big "Thank You" to Kumaran Silks, Mylapore, Chennai for making all the Maithri students happy and joyous with their donation of splendid and trendy apparel. The boys enjoyed choosing denim pants and t-shirts and girls chose pretty churidhars sets.

The following day (Nov. 4) was the birthday of founder trustee celebrated by 30 students and family members. Mr. Subramaniyam organized a cultural and educational program and many Maithri students participated in this function. Maithri trustee, Dr. Shobana Sundaram from USA took part in this function. Former Maithri students also took part and provided support to Maithri and Maithri services. Mr Govindarajan (visually impaired) and his family lauded Maithri's services. He recollected how Maithri had provided support for him and his two daughters who are currently part of Maithri.

October 2013

Gandhi Jayanthi was celebrated on the 2nd of Oct by Maithri students and a quiz on Gandhi and his "ahimsa" movement was conducted. In the evening, a cultural event with students from Sevalaya (Tirunidravoor, near Chennai) took place where Maithri students performed a dance. Talks on Babuji and his life were given by students and invitees in the Ramakrishna school (north branch) auditorium.

September 2013

Applications from students of Ramana Vidhyalaya, Chrompet, Chenai were scrutinized and approved. Students were provided with school fees for the academic year 2013-14 and two CDs from Coimbatore on life and services of Mahatma Gandhi were presented to the students.

5th Sept marked Teachers day. Maithri students gave a short talk on their favourite teacher and how the teacher has inspirited them. Miss. Akila got the first prize in this event, a book written by Dr. Radhakrishnan.

This month started with good news. Another Maithri student got a job offer in a manufacturing company and would enter into workforce.

August 2013

Maithri Founder with more than 15 students and volunteers took part on Aug 4 in the walk organized by Citizens Run Trust. The weather started out to be bad but turned pleasant as time went by. All participants ran with happiness as they running for a noble cause. The walk ended with a beautiful dance performance by the well known Chennai group of John Britto. Well known and established NGOs ran with their children and staff the 5 kilometers run. This gave all the participants immense satisfaction and enjoyment in the environment of Marina Beach.

On Aug 15th, the occasion of the 67th Independence Day, Maithri distributed free food and the Indian National Flag for school children in Pallikaranai, a growing outskirt of Chennai. Project was well organized by the local Maithri Students and well wishers in spite of heavy rain.

July 2013

Maithri founder trustee, Mr. Shreedhar with 5 students and volunteers visited Kalanjiyam Trust at Madhuranthagam, Chingleput Dist. near Chennai. The founder handed over educational support checks for 21 students out of which 6 are in college. The students belong to families struggling with acute financial problems. Local Government and Panchayat heads took part along with a police officer. Large local gathering supported the joint project of Kalanjiyam and Maithri and their strong interests and activities towards 'rural education'.

June 2013

On 14th June, Maithri welcomed Mr. Santiago Sauquet and Ms. Mariano from MarcSauquet Foundation, Spain. They were impressed with the interaction they had with the students of Maithri. They were happy and promised to continue their support for the forthcoming year as well.

Maithri celebrated its 22nd anniversary on 30th June, 2013 in Panigraha Kalyana Mandapam. An event filled with students' performances of dances (western, filmy and classical). Martial-arts like Karate, Pyramid etc.

Dr. Lavanya Anand, Professor and Head of the Department, Commerce, Meenakshi College for Women, Chennai was the Chief-Guest. She gave away the academic awards to Kavitha and Raghavi. Kavita got "Seshadri Award" for scoring the highest marks in the 12th grade and Raghavi bagged "Seetha Award" for scoring the highest in the 10th grade.

On behalf of Maithri, Mr. Chandrasekhar of SAMMA Engineering Group gave away the support cheque to Balaji Krishna (who studied from the first standard and got engineering course in Sastras, Tanjore).

May 2013

We are pleased that many of our students moved into higher education programs with outstanding merits. A few exemplary performers are mentioned here.

Balaji Krishna, who has been under the umbrella of Maithri from Kindergarten, got info B.E. (Meco-tronics), a 4-year program in SASTRA, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. Bhavana Sharma has enrolled into B.Com in D.G.Vaishvav College, Chennai. This years' 12th topper of Maithri, Kavitha and Aishwarya a regular in Maihtri's cultural programs got into B.Com in Meenakshi Collage, Chennai.

M. Gopinath, who was under the umbrella of Maithri from Kindergarten till his Bachelors' degree, has obtained placement as Junior Executive Trainee in CTS through campus interview. S. Dhanyalakshmi, another success story, has passed her B.Tech (IT) and has got placement in an "off campus" interview in Hewelett Packard (HP) as Software Engineer.

Maithri students who have obtained placements this month are proudly listed here. A.Lokeshwara, DME, has obtained a placement in Mahendra Research Valley as Trainee. K.Ramya B.Sc (Psy) is working in Swift Freight Pvt. Ltd., as Executive Customer Service. K. Bhakyalashmi passed BBM and is working in Ramco Systems, Chennai as Payroll Assistant. M.Ganesh, B.Com, has got placement in Global Software Corporation, Chennai as "Trainee"

Maithri looks forward to many more success stories and bright future to all its students.

April 2013

In this month, most of Maithri's activities were centered on preparing school students for their annual examinations by preparing mock question papers and creating ambient atmosphere to concentrate and write the examinations. The students will be informed of their marks in the same day and they will be asked to take re-exam with corrected version to gain confidence. These exams will be conducted on all the subjects that will be required in their final exams.

March 2013

Maithri conducted Eye screening camp in Sri Ramana Vidhyalaya, Chrompet, Chennai and the screening were performed by four doctors from Sankara Netralaya, Chennai. 151 students were selected by the school and of this 10 students needed eye-glasses. The doctors as part of their kindness provided 5 glasses and the rest are in the process of getting these glasses before May first week. Sankara Netralaya doctors checked nearly 30 elders as well and found half of them need hospital visit which could lead to surgery. The doctors also want Maithri to have a camp in the coming months to screen more elders with additional sophisticated instruments.

February 2013

On the 3rd of this month, 64 students went for a trip with Maithri Founder Trustee and some very senior associates of the Trust, to a nearby village resort CHETTIPUNNIYAM which is situated around 80 Km from Chennai city. This was to provide a breather to the students before they dive into rigorous examination days that would begin very soon. Everybody enjoyed the short but relaxing trip. The same evening, Founder Trustee Shreedhar was invited to receive a check of Rs.10000 towards education of under-privileged children from Thursday Ladies Club, Besant Nagar and Ms. Fatima Babu, well-known media personality gave away the check to Mr. Shreedhar. This was covered in Adyar Times, a weekly for the Adyar, Besant Nagar region of Chennai.

On the 9th of this month, Founder Trustee Shreedhar participated as a guest in ARUWE (an NGO that cares for old-aged orphans and help them medically and emotionally to cope with the age related issues) and distributed certificates to the persons took active part in the social services in various capacities.

On 10th, Maithri delightfully welcomed Mrs. Sulochana Krishnamurthy and Mr. Krishnamurthy from Handicare International (HCI), Canada. They interacted with students and exchanged views on educational and career plans. The 44 students who were partially sponsored by HCI thanked HCI, Canada for their support, HCI has been sponsoring Maithri students since 2004; starting with 12 students. Maithri honored the two kind-hearted and generous persons with both enjoyed their time with students equally.

January 2013

Happy New Year to one and all.

On 16th Jan, Maithri was invited to Chennai Silver Pearls Lions Club and was honored with a check of Rs 10,000 for educating needy children. Ms. Sowmya Simhan along with Lions Secretary, gave away the check to Maithri Founder, Trustee Mr. Shreedhar Rajaram.

Maithri has been supported by many international organizations and have always been eager to welcome these visitors. On 20th Jan, Mr. Raghunath of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Seva Foundation visited Maithri and met with many of the students and distributed prizes for the winners of the TIRUKKURAL reciting competition (which was held on 25th December 2012). Miss. Ishwarya and Miss. Varshini who won the first and second prize received a cash award of Rs.250 and Rs. 150 respectively. All participants received a TIRUKKURAL book and a certificate of participation.
